A memorandum of understanding between Iran and South Korea in the area of broadband internet and “the internet of things”

On May 3rd, it was posted in the BusinessKorea that the Ministry of Science, technology, information and communication (ICT), and future plans in South Korea announced a joint examination with Iran of the Memorandum of Understanding regarding cooperation on ICT, which was signed in 1990, while renewing the cooperation in this field through the cooperation committee, which began its operations in 1991 and stopped in 2004 due to the economic sanctions imposed on Iran.

This is in order use advanced technologies of South Korea to accelerate the development of high-speed internet and ICT market in Iran, currently estimated at 19 billion USD and expected to reach 29.8 billion USD by 2020. However, it was reported that Iran does not currently have broadband internet services so there are opportunities for Korean companies in the country. An example is the mobile provider KT, which continued to operate in Iran despite economic sanctions and supplied to TCI, the largest telecom operator in Iran, consulting on design and operation of communication networks.

The company intends to take part in innovative projects related to the communication infrastructure and broadband internet in the country, through the establishment of working groups to find opportunities for cooperation.

The updated memorandum of understanding is to be signed during the year, including parts regarding policy advice and business assistance. Also a memorandum of understanding has been reached with the Ministry of Scientific Research and Technology in Iran for cooperation in the fields of Applied Sciences, as well as a decision to have the first meeting of the joint committee at the end of next year.

In addition, SK Telecom intends to deepen the cooperation in the fields of Iranian gas and water supply as well as “smart houses”. Within this framework, the company agreed with the Iranian Energy Ministry to establish projects based on IoT (Internet of Things) remote control of power in 15 buildings, alongside with the company’s projects with the Iranian National Gas Company for the measurement of gas consumption in 5,000 houses.
