Huge investments in telecom and information technology in Saudi Arabia
On April 23rd it was reported that the government of Saudi Arabia has invested about 120 billion Reals (about 32 billion USD) in the development of the telecommunication and information technology sectors during 2015. This message was delivered at the opening of the Conference of High Performance Computing in the kingdom (SAHPC), which was sponsored by King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), in cooperation with the Saudi company Aramco and several international universities and companies engaged in information and technology.
The SAHPC forum creates a “critical mass” that connects High Performance Computing (HPC) communities in the kingdom, while creating cooperation between businesses, research and education, alongside the creation of a “Saudi national identity as a growing international superpower in the field of supercomputing”.
It was also reported that Saudi Arabia is the largest investor in the field of telecommunications and information technologies in the region, being one of the ten highest investing countries in this field in the world, and has one of the 500 fastest computers in the world. It was also placed second among the countries with the most energy-efficient computers in November 2012.
In this context, noted is a publication from January 7th that the Saudi Telecom Company (STC) inaugurated in its Riyadh KACST headquarters a Data Center, which is one of the most important investments of the company, alongside the establishment of more centers, which are planned in the cities of Jeddah and Dammam.
