An Egyptian governmental report shows a decline in the number of internet and mobile users

On April 17th it was a report concerning the 4th quarter of 2015 was published by the Egyptian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. As part of the report, data concerning the country’s telecom market was published;

  • Use costs – compared to 2014, there was a decrease in the costs of internet services

The share of GDP

  • The contribution of the Egyptian telecommunications sector to the GDP grew by 7.3% during the last quarter of 2015 compared to the same period the previous year.
  • The contribution of the telecom and information systems sectors to the GDP was 3.1% in the last quarter of 2015 compared to 2.9% to the same period the previous year.

Mobile phone users

  • The number of users grew by 0.15% in January 2016 to – 94.16 million, compared to 94 million in December 2015, but annual analysis shows that during January 2016 a decrease of 1.1% was recorded compared to the same period last year.
  • A publication from February 2nd by the same government office also shows such decline in October 2015 when there were records of 93.1 million mobile users, compared to 94.5 million a year earlier, reflecting a decrease in penetration from 110% to 106% of the population.

Internet users

  • Decrease in the number of internet users, from – 33.8 million in December 2015 to – 26.2 million after a month *. (The source was unclear regarding the cause of dwindling number of internet users in Egypt by 7.6 million in one month – TP).
  • At the same publication from February 2nd dealing with the increase in this number in October 2015 to 33.7 million users compared to 27.5 a year earlier.
  • The use of ADSL connection has increased year after year to 3.7 million, 46% of these users are in Greater Cairo and 26% in the delta region.

Mobile Internet users – February 2nd publication argues that internet access is usually through cell phones and notes that in October 2015 there were 26.09 million mobile internet users.
