The telecommunication market in Turkey

On April 5th, a new study published by the Authority of Information and Communication Technologies in Turkey (ICTA) summarizing the electronic communication market in Turkey in the fourth quarter of 2015 includes the following;

Infrastructure –

  • As of March 2nd 2016 -there are 686 service providers.
  • Türk Telekom has 211,528 kilometers of optic-fiber infrastructure, 124,349 km of them for internet backbone and the rest for internet access.

Market Structure –

  • Türk Telekom hols 84.3% of the total local calls, 57.8% of national calls, 55% of cellular calls and 68.4% of international calls.
  • Total net sales of Türk Telekom and mobile services operators is 8.2 billion TRY, while income of other competitors is about 2.2 billion TRY.
  • Investment of Türk Telekom and mobile services operators are about 13.1 billion TRY, while that of other stands at 507.9 million TRY.

Cell phone –

  • The volume of mobile calls stands at 56.9 billion minutes of talking time and 2.7 billion calls in landlines.
  • Germany is the country to which and from which most of the mobile conversations are held.
  • 24.5 billion, instant messaging messages were sent.
  • Mobile call minutes increased from 108.2 billion in 2009 to 222.6 billion in 2015, with a decline in landline voice minutes from 23.9 billion to 11.3 billion during this period.
  • The cellular penetration rate stands at 93.5% and exceeds the 100% if diminish the population of 0-9.

Phone Lines –

  • Landline telephone penetration rate stands at 14.6%, with 11.5 million subscribers.

Internet –

  • The volume of broadband subscribers has grown from 6 million in 2008 to 48.6 million.
  • The number of Internet subscribers grew by 3.9% over the past quarter thanks to a growing number of mobile and fiber internet.
  • The annual growth rate of total internet subscriber was 17.8%.
  • The number of mobile internet subscribers stands at 39.1 million.
  • 66.4% fixed broadband subscribers prefer proposals in which the download speed is 10-30 Mbps.

Digital TV –

• TURKSAT has 1,160,985 subscribers in cable television and 798,476 digital television subscribers.
